“It’s official. I will be making my first public appearance and speech since my release at The Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas,” Ulbricht announced.
His return to the spotlight follows a dramatic turn of events: a full presidential pardon issued by Donald Trump on his first day back in office — fulfilling a 2024 campaign promise made during the Libertarian National Convention.
From Double Life Sentence to Center Stage
Back in 2015, Ulbricht was convicted of seven federal charges stemming from his creation of Silk Road, an underground online marketplace that facilitated more than $213 million in Bitcoin-based anonymous trades — many of which involved illegal goods.
He received two life sentences plus 40 years without parole, despite framing Silk Road as a platform for free-market libertarian ideals. Prosecutors, however, portrayed it as a major threat to public safety.
Ulbricht was famously arrested in 2013 at a public library in San Francisco — a pivotal moment that sparked one of crypto’s most enduring legal sagas.
